JT Film Review

There are some great looking movies coming out in the next year or so, and some of them have trailers out. So here, in no particular order, are some that I am looking forward to. Enjoy!

district9poster-thumb-450x665—– District 9 —–

The first trailer implied a documentary-style drama/thriller; while the second opens it up more and shows us a bit of Transformers/Terminator style action. While that turn has me a bit worried, advance buzz has this as being one of the best sci-fi movies in a long long time. I personally can’t wait.

AIW-Alice—– Alice in Wonderland —–

Tim Burton’s style seems a perfect match for the psychedelic world of Alice in Wonderland, but will he be able to keep a decent narrative structure? And whats this about it being a sequel to the books? Nonetheless, the trailer looks promising, and the amazing cast (Johnny Depp, Helena Bonhem Carter, Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman, Anne Hathaway, Stephen Fry, Timothy Spall, Christopher Lee, etc etc) looks dazzling to say the least.

The-Road-Poster—– The Road —–

The book is hailed as a modern masterpiece, and Viggo Mortenson, who stars, is very picky about his projects. Other cast members include Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall, and Charlize Theron; a lineup not to be sneezed at. The tone of the movie seems part Children of Men, part 28 Weeks Later (no zombies though). Either way, we should be getting a solid sci-fi movie coming our way, which is something seriously lacking of late. When Transformers 2 is all we get for sci-fi, we know theres something wrong.

Another book adaptation, this time a “beloved children’s classic.” Now personally I never read it, but the trailer is really interesting. Heck, it’s one of the best trailers I;ve ever seen. It promises an imaginative kids movie, and that is good in a time when even Pixar is starting to get a bit formulaic (Up, looking right at you.)

the-box-01—– The Box —–

Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly brings us a Twilight Zone style thriller. I think it could be quite good, depending on what the “twist” is. Cameron Diaz and James Marsden seem strange choices for the material, but we’ll see.

Tron-Legacy-Thumbnail-web—– Tron Legacy —–

The ultimate geek movie gets a new treatment. The trailer promises a uniquely stylish visual world, with action that is stylish and visually interesting. And I guess the visuals are all we can fortell about this movie so far; the story better be good. Without a good story or characters, good visuals don’t mean anything (*cough* Michael Bay *cough*).

bluetooth virgin—– The Blue Tooth Virgin —–

An indie movie that’s script is about bad script writers. It could crash and burn. Or, it could be genius. It seems funny in a dry, intelligent sort of way, and for some reason I can’t see it going into huge “cliche-land”. I doubt it will get much recognition, but we can always hope, can’t we?

only_l200907081547—– Only —–

Another movie that I can’t see getting much recognition, this one is solid hardcore indie; and it looks quite good. It is unusal to find a movie about kids, and kids who sound and act real nonetheless. I can only hope this will find its way to a DVD bin or rack near me, but I don’t think it likely.

aseriousman_l200907291724—– A Serious Man —–

I must admit to not being too familiar with the Coen Brothers, but their next movie seems quite funny, and again, in a dry, witty way. You know, smart funny, not stupid funny. The Coen Brothers apparently rarely make a bad movie, and here I see a movie that looks good. Thus, it will not get any good distribution, I’m sure of it. Ah well…

i_sell_the_dead_xlg—– I Sell The Dead—–

I think this movie makes the list just for its “what the heck” factor. Meriadoc Brandybuck from Lord of the Rings stars in a dark comedy about a grave digger who digs up the “undead”, while Ron Perlman co-stars as a monk who appears to be taking his last confession. Hmmm, wierd. Hmmm, screwed up. Could be good. Could be crap too, but lets keep our hopes up.
